  • M.I.C.E In The Mountains!!!

                               Hello Dear Missionary Travelers,

It's been a few months since sending you a report, and I have missed letting you know all of the exciting things going on here in the mission field. Of course, I have a lot of catching up to do, so let's begin.

In the last report, I told you a little about the MICE at the school, but now, we have MICE in the mountains; MICE in the bakery, and MICE in the clinic; There are MICE everywhere!!

People have written asking us to periodically tell who the MICE are. Well, our MICE are children from the mountain village of La Zona, Santa Barbara, Honduras who are attending Maranatha Institute of Christian Education, a small elementary school we established two years ago to help educate the poor children in our mountain village. We also think of our missionary volunteers as our MICE, because without their help, the work would be quite difficult to accomplish.

Our students, (MICE), are all from extremely poor families. Some are even living in, what I consider, crisis conditions. The good news is, our MICE are receiving training like no other children; And they're having fun doing it.

Not long ago, our MICE joined together with our volunteers to build a single mother in the mountains a house made of adobe, (mud bricks).

       July-1   July-2

What kid doesn't like to play in the mud? This way, they can play and learn to help others at the same time.

Recently, we decided to teach our older MICE how to work in our bakery, La Canasta De Vida. To our surprise, they turned out to be quite gifted. They are learning to make various types of whole grain breads, gluten, and deserts.

         July-4   July-5

                            July-6

You'd probably think that this is enough to keep our MICE busy, but wait until you see what else they're learning.

Caution: The following medical photos are explicit, and may be disturbing to some viewers.

How many young people do you know have had medical training, and the opportunity to assist with medical procedures?

Our older students have had medical missionary training, and assist with treatments at the clinic.

In the following photos, an 18 month old baby girl tipped over a pot of scalding water, and obtained 2nd degree burns over 95% of her right arm and 100% of her right hand. It was a terrible burn, and could even be considered critical for a child that young. The MICE helped to remove the loose blisters, and redressed the arm with sterile gauze. Our MICE received hands-on training in burn care, and were a big help to me in the treatment of this baby girl. It took many days of treatment and dressing changes, but in the end, the burns healed beautifully with minimal scaring.

The MICE learn to remove loose tissue from the burn site.

After cleaning the burn, and applying a special burn cream, Celia redresses the wound with sterile gauze.

                                          *******************

Friends, Our MICE are very special children who are being trained in various areas in order to break the cycle of ignorance and poverty in their lives. Already, they are head & shoulders above any young person their age from their country.

With continued education, I know that God can and will do great things through these children at M.I.C.E.

If you would like to help them in any way, or would like to comment on our reports please contact us at -

missionarytraveler@yahoo.com  we'd love to hear from you.

  • "TRAIN UP A CHILD........."

    Hello Missionary Travelers,

It's been a while since updating our MTI site, but so much has been happening in the mission field. As many of you already know, we've started a small multilevel elementary school at our Outpost in Honduras. This is our second year, and though the enrolment seems small, (only 10 students), we have a very special group of children in our care. Classes are Sunday through Thursday from 8am to 3pm. You should see them

walking up to the Outpost; They're beautiful!!! You can hear them coming long before you see them.

They sing Christian songs (in English!!!) as they walk the 3/4 mile stretch to school.

One very important part of their training is agriculture; Not only gardening, but planting flowers, caring for the trees and plants and learning how to enrich the soil. Fortunately, a young man from Colombia, S.A. just arrived to volunteer with us for a year or two, and his specialty is agriculture and health food preparation. He'll be working closely with the M.I.C.E.. Oh yea, we call our kids MICE. It stands for Maranatha Institute of Christian Education. Kind-of cute huh?

There is a beautiful book entitled "The Desire Of Ages", and in this book is written these words:

"Parents, in the training of your children, study the lessons that God has given in nature. If you would train a pink, or rose, or lily, how would you do it? Ask the gardener by what process he makes every branch and leaf to flourish so beautifully, and to develop in symmetry and loveliness. He will tell you that it was by no rude touch, no violent effort; for this would only break the delicate stems. It was by little attentions, often repeated. He moistened the soil, and protected the growing plants from the fierce blasts and from the scorching sun, and God caused them to flourish and to blossom into loveliness. In dealing with your children, follow the method of the gardener. By gentle touches, by loving ministrations, seek to fashion their characters after the pattern of the character of Christ.....

Teach the children to see Christ in nature. Take them out into the open air, under the nobel trees, into the garden; and in all the wonderful works of creation teach them to see an expression of His love. Teach them that He made the laws which govern all living things, that He has made laws for us, and that these laws are for our happiness and joy." D.A. pg. 516

Aside from teaching our M.I.C.E., the routine activities at the clinic continue. Elsa is not only teaching many of the classes in school, but she also does treatments and consultations. Here, she is treating a woman with ulcers on both feet. As you can see, there is gross deformity in the foot due to years of infection and scaring. Much of this woman's problem stems from her poor diet. Toxins have built up in her system causing the ulcers in her feet. Elsa gives the woman healthy juices to cleanse her system, and places her on a strict diet. Every morning she soaks the woman's feet in Goldenseal water. Sunlight plays a very important part in the healing process; 15-20 minutes of indirect sunlight does wonders. Though this woman will never regain full function of her feet, she is in the healing process; And if she is faithful in continuing her health regime, the ulcers will heal in time.

I hope you have enjoyed this months report. If you wish to comment on any of our MTI reports, please contact me at - missionarytraveler@yahoo.com.  Until next time...

    Maranatha,  Joe & Elsa

  • Missionary Travelers Report - vol.2

    Hello Dear Friends,

Life is great in the foreign mission field. I tell everyone, "There's no greater work, than that of helping someone in need".

It appears that everything in this world is geared towards pleasing ones self; And people have never been more unhappy than they are today. If you're unhappy, lonely, depressed, or even sick, .... I have a tip for you; Try going out and doing something good for someone else, ... expecting nothing in return. I can assure you that you will begin feeling much better. It's actually a law of nature; You cannot give of yourself for the sake of someone else, without you being doubly blessed. Try it, ... you'll be glad you did.

This may be the last posting I will make for a couple of weeks. I am returning to the mountains to continue the work I love; But, thought you'd like an update before I go.

This past holiday season, Maranatha Medical Ministries decided to search out those whom we call, "the poorest of the poor", and give them gift baskets.

            MMT-2   MMT-3

It truely was a wonderful experience. we even found one family, (a widow of 4), who is very poor. She didn't even have clothes to put on her children. Of course, we had a great time dressing the kids, teaching them how to brush their teeth, and giving them healthy foods to eat.

         MMT-4     MMT-1

This is how to spend the holiday season

Just the other day, a fellow brought his 5 year old neice to us who had been hit in the head with a rock.

     MMT-5 MMT-6

It was a deep wound needing sutures. You guessed it, .... our volunteers jumped right into action. None of them had sutured before, but fortunately they had received training just that morning.

     MMT-7 MMT-8

I tell all of my volunteers, "first you watch me, ... then, I watch you". Hands-on training; That's the best way to learn I always say.

So, after personally putting three sutures, I turned things over to the medical trainees, Estephan, Alexandra, and Levi. Though a bit nervous, they did a great job.

    MMT-9  MMT-10

I was especially amazed at how calm the little girl was. She didn't cry at all. She just kept looking up at all of us with those big brown eyes as if saying, "OK, ... I trust you people".

She was such a special patient, I just had to give her one of my favorite stuffed animals, Mr. Circus Elephant

You know friends, ... every day, God gives each one of us opportunities to help someone else. No, you don't have to perform surgery; But just sending a caring note to someone; or giving them an encouraging phone call. Sometimes, all a person needs is a smile from you.

  • Maranatha Missionary Report #1

    Report #1

    Hi Missionary Friends,

This is a mission report from one of our volunteers who recently worked with us in the mountains of Honduras. Hope you enjoy the report.

    *********************************************************

One afternoon at our Clinic Outpost in the mountains of Santa Barbara, Honduras, a young man came carrying a boy about the age of 5 years old. Apparently, he had fallen and knocked out all of his front teeth; at least that's what we thought at first glance. After closer examination, we learned that the teeth had been actually been forced up into the gum; and some had broken off in the gum. The inside of his lips had been cut by the teeth during the fall as well.

This poor family didn't have the money to take him to the hospital in town (nearly 5 miles away). They had heard that we are missionaries;missionaries who don't charge the poor for medical services. Well, they came to the right place. we were in the middle of a training session, and it was an excellent opportunity to show our volunteers how to care for this young boy.

                               Maranatha Photos 711

Upon examination, I saw that the teeth which had been broken and pressed into the gums needed to be removed, and the gums needed suturing.

I asked the boy what his name was; He answered, "mi nombre es Henry". Well Henry, we're going to fix you right up.

Maranatha Photos 715   Maranatha Photos 710

Little Henry was such a brave boy. He didn't cry or fight us at all. Even though I numbed his gums real well, I knew he was feeling some pain. After what seemed like hours, i finally removed the last bit of broken tooth from inside his gums. Now it was time to suture. This was going to be the tricky part,...so I thought.

                                 Maranatha Photos 716

Actually, suturing little Hrnry was much easier than working on adults. I still remember him looking at me with those big brown eyes as if to say, "I trust you". How could you not do all you could to help such a one in need.

The surgery was a success, thank the Lord; Little Henry lost all of his front teeth, but the good news is,...he will get a new set coming in very soon. We never did see Henry again, but we were informed that his mouth healed perfectly, and his new set was coming in straight.

Of course, our volunteers spent most of the day talking about the event. The most exciting part of it all, is knowing that you're helping someone else.

People around the world are so busy working to please and satisfy themselves; They think they're happy. Little do they know that true happiness is giving of yourself, to help others.

If you like reading our missionary travelers stories, please drop us a line and tell us what you think. we'd love hearing from you.

    Until next time ............. Maranatha
